NWO Vidi grant to uncover the Milky Way’s hidden stellar populations with Gaia and LISA

SRON astronomer Valeriya Korol receives an NWO Vidi grant to predict the gravitational-wave signal that future space detector LISA will measure from double white dwarfs in the Milky Way. The project aims to map these stellar fossils and better understand how the Milky Way assembled over time. It combines observations from ESA’s Gaia telescope with gravitational-wave predictions for LISA.

TROPOMI detects large methane leak from Niger oil field

The TROPOMI satellite instrument detects thousands of methane plumes annually. On October 8, using its automated plume detection algorithm, SRON’s methane team came across a large methane plume over an area where they rarely see this – an oil field in Niger.
