SRON joined an innovation project ‘3D PrintKompas 2030’ to investigate the possibilities and limitations of 3D metal printing for space instrumentation. 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a stable and mature production process. 3D metal printing is relatively new though and not qualified for space applications. The partners in 3D PrintKompas, from small experienced companies to research institutes and (applied) universities, create a unique ecosystem for highly advanced 3D printing. SRON is pursuing research on Aluminum printed telescope mirrors for astronomy instrumentation. These mirrors must be compliant with the harsh space environment specifications, like low cryogenic temperatures, high vibration resistance and more.
3D PrintKompas is co-financed by the EU.
