Over fifty girls from two secondary schools were introduced to space research at Kapteyn & SRON in Groningen and SRON in Leiden as part of VHTO Girls’ Day. They took part in workshops on soldering and analysing satellite data, and learnt about telescopes and the Universe.
On the programme:
• a visit to the Blaauw Observatory with a lesson on telescopes
• analysing data from the TROPOMI space instrument, which measures greenhouse gases and pollution
• lab tours featuring X-rays, infrared, lasers, nitrogen, lenses and prisms
• workshops on designing and building space instruments
• soldering
After an intensive morning, the day concluded with a lunch for the girls from Gomarus College, who visited SRON & Kapteyn Institute in Groningen, and from Visser ‘t Hooft Lyceum Rijnsburg, who paid a visit to the SRON lab in Leiden.
