Core Values
At SRON, we embrace NWO’s core values, which we also share with the other groundbreaking institutes that are also part of NWO-I, NWO’s institute organisation:
Groundbreaking
We pioneer and explore the boundaries of knowledge, applications and processes. And we go further in this than anyone has gone before.
Committed
We are committed to our organisation and we anticipate current issues in science and society.
Reliable
We do what we promise. We are honest, open and meticulous. And you can hold us accountable to that.
Connecting
We seek to collaborate and see the big picture. We are open and bring stakeholders, different areas of expertise and agendas together.
Privacy Policy
SRON embraces and respects the NWO-I privacy policy.
Diversity, Inclusion and Equality
We strive to be an inclusive workplace where all people can be themselves, be valued and based on their contributions, and lead the way for others. Read how we shape this within the NWO-I institutes here. SRON is also a member of Workplace Pride.
Digital Accessibility
We are improving the digital accessibility of our websites at SRON in steps, so that they will meet the accessibility requirements for Dutch (semi)governmental organisations. An initial survey by Accessibility Foundation is available on request. That still concerned our old website. With this new website, improvement steps have been taken for digital accessibility.
Behaviour
SRON is dedicated to providing an equitable, welcoming and safe environment for everyone: employees, trainees, temporary employees and visitors, including employees or visitors from our contracters.
We believe that SRON staff should reflect society – a diverse workforce successfully working together regardless of our real and perceived differences. As an NWO institute, SRON follows the diversity and desirable behaviour policies of NWO.
The NWO policies and NWO Code of Conduct apply for everyone who works at or on behalf of NWO to act with integrity, respect and professionalism. These three behavioural characteristics are the guideline for desired behaviour within NWO and a precondition for an optimal working climate.
So SRON, like NWO, is an organisation where everyone feels welcome, can be themselves and can bring out the best in themselves and in teams:
- We value and respect the differences between people in terms of their background including gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, ethnic background, age, opinion or religion.
- The environment includes our premises, buildings, online collaboration and communication tools, as well as in-person and hybrid conferences, meetings and activities.
- We behave professionally and are kind and respectful to others. All our communication, written, verbal and non-verbal is appropriate for a professional audience.
Many situations related to a Code of Conduct can be solved immediately by a respectful interview or dialogue. In other cases, the situation can be reported using the following applicable method(s):
- Employees can contact their line manager, the head of HR or the internal or external confidentiality counsellor
- Visitors can contact their host or the SRON head of HR
- Conference attendees can contact the conference organizer(s) or the head of HR
The parties involved will be heard on the shortest possible notice. Based on the outcome of the investigation, further actions may be taken.

ANBI Status
Through NWO-I, SRON has the status of an Institution for General Benefit (ANBI) for the tax authorities, for people who want to support scientific research with donations.
