Our approach
Since 1961 we lead – and we contribute to – the development and realisation of international space based scientific instruments. These are missions with agencies like NASA, ESA ans JAXA.
To address unanswered scientific questions in these communities, we develop technology, instrument concepts and eventually instruments. The scientific objectives of these missions are determined by the scientific community and enjoy broad support.
SRON builds on a long history within the national and international scientific communities in the fields of astrophysics, Earth observation and technology development. Necessary specialist expertise is brought together under one roof at SRON. Furthermore, we have built up long-standing partnerships with knowledge partners and industry partners.
Our connecting role
Our approach helps to ensure that Dutch scientific communities are involved in forefront astrophysical research and climate research.
We support the Dutch and international scientific communities with the analysis of scientific data from space instruments for their research. We actively manage and improve open data analysis tools that are recognised as international standards.
As national center of expertise, SRON advises the Dutch government, and coordinates national contributions to international space missions from a scientific perspective.
Our impact
Through our research, we provide evidence-based insights to international programmes for climate management and emissions mitigation, and we contribute pieces to the puzzle of the universe and our place within it. We encourage applications of space science and technology in society.
SRON plays a key role in training and educating the next generation of space scientists and engineers.
