My research is focused on X-ray spectroscopy of astronomical objects. This is related to three different categories: instrumentation, model development and astrophysical studies.

1. Instrumentation: I am currently the PI of the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM-Newton and the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on Chandra. In addition, I am participating actively in Hitomi as member of the Science Advisory Committee. I have contributed or am contributing to simulations, modeling, calibration and feasibility studies for a range of missions including BeppoSAX, EDGE, Xenia, NEW, Origin, XEUS, IXO, Athena, Arcus.

2. Model development: I am leading the development of the SPEX package, a package that allows spectral data analysis, modeling and simulations for astrophysical sources under a wide range of conditions. See www.sron.nl/~spex for more details.

3. Astrophysical studies: my main research interest is on X-ray spectroscopy of extra-galactic sources (like Active galactic Nuclei, clusters of galaxies and the warm-hot intergalactic medium, but every now and then I also contribute to the analysis of other interesting X-ray sources.
