Profile

To improve our understanding of the budget of greenhouse gases, good quality measurements of their mole fractions are needed. These measurements are fed into an inverse model, which uses the gradients in atmospheric mole fractions to find corresponding surface emissions. Measurements from sensors onboard a satellite can be a suitable source of information of GHG mole fractions, as these sensors can provide the required global coverage. However, there are substantial challenges to making the use of these measurements in an adequate manner. For example, the satellite measurements often suffer from atmospheric scattering related errors. In addition, errors in transport models, that are used within the inverse model, also adversely affect the determination of correct emissions. I work on improving the utility of satellite observations and ground-based observations for constraining methane and carbon dioxide emissions.
