The electronic section of the Engineering group is involved in design, simulation, and production of space hardware and software. The manufacturing of space qualified electronics is an inhouse activity using the cleanroom facilities, pick and place machining, and a well equipped workshop. The electronic sections also support special developments, such as the space technology activities for the program line Technology, which requires especially built test set ups fully tailored to the needs.
Analogue Electronics and ASIC development
The performance of the scientific instruments designed and developed at SRON often depends on the quality of the analogue design. SRON employs a specialized subdivision for the design, simulation, and verification of these analogue circuits. Its main objective is to design effective and efficient solutions to engineering problems in the realm of system engineering and analogue electronics.
SRON started to incorporate integrated circuit design into their portfolio since 2003. The main goal of this activity is to develop state-of-the-art mixed-signal integrated circuits for space applications, which are not commercially available.
Digital Electronics and Software design
The instruments designed and developed at SRON commonly incorporate digital logic as part of the electronics hardware. SRON employs a specialized subdivision for the design, simulation, and verification of these electronics. Its main objective is to design effective and efficient solutions to engineering problems in the realm of digital and software technology.
The electronic assembly equipment and clean rooms have been upgraded to a level that meets the quality assurance requirements for the production of space electronics. SRON invested in high density surface-mount technology equipment and high-speed PCB layout design capabilities, used by our experienced PCB-Lay outers and certified assembly-technicians, in order to realize high-tech hardware.
