The engineering section in Groningen has resources for the three design disciplines: mechanics, electronics and software. For the design of (sub)systems for space instrumentation and for test set-ups in the research labs, extensive use is made of modern CAD and simulation tools like Creo Parametric, Creo Simulate, Mentor Graphics, Comsol Multiphysics, Spice, Scilab and Keysight ADS. For testing we have labs with various equipment where we perform and support all kinds of tests for the development and characterisation of instrumentation

Some of our core-expertises are:

  • Thermal design for extremely low temperatures (few tens of mKelvins)
  • opto-mechanics for (cryogenic) instrumentation
  • (Cryogenic) mechatronics
  • Shielding and EMC
  • Low noise and analog front-end electronics
  • RF electronics
  • (Embedded) software

The design work is supported with experienced technical staff for production of components and assembly of (sub)systems. For the mechanical work we are equipped with a toolshop with CNC milling machines where most of the mechanical structures can be produced in-house and after production, measured on a 3D measuring machine. For the support of electronics realization we have capabilities for fast prototyping as well as the assembly of complex cabling for instrumentation and test systems.
